The Hot Forming process

What is Hot Forming ?

When your parts require complex geometries or the use of materials that are difficult to form cold, Hot Forming becomes the ideal solution. This process consists in deforming a metal sheet at high temperature, typically between 450°C and 950°C depending on the material. Heating modifies the material’s behavior, lowering its strength and enhancing its formability, thus allowing to form complex shapes with reduced internal stresses, while maintaining the material’s outstanding mechanical properties.

Our Hot Forming and Superplastic presses are designed to turn your production constraints into performance opportunities. Drawing on our expertise, each machine is engineered to deliver precision, reliability and efficiency, ensuring your industrial projects move forward without compromise. From tool development to final production, we put our know-how at the service of parts ready to be integrated into your production lines.

Materials

Hot Forming offers great flexibility in terms of materials. This process can be used to work with a wide range of metal alloys, including titanium alloys, aluminum alloys, nickel alloys, and some stainless or high-strength steels.

Industries

Our expertise in Hot Forming is mainly used in the aerospace industry, guaranteeing complex and reliable parts. But our expertise doesn’t stop there: we also support projects in the automotive, energy, and agri-food industries, with solutions tailored to each industrial need.

Applications in the aerospace industry

Load-bearing structures and critical interfaces

We manufacture major structural components that connect the aircraft’s large assemblies and withstand high mechanical loads. Pylons, structural discs and rings are engineered to provide the optimal balance between mechanical strength, weight optimization, and durability. Ti-6Al-4V formed pylons perfectly illustrate this approach. For structural discs and rings, our processes enable material savings of up to 82% compared to conventional forged solutions, while ensuring equivalent or even superior mechanical performance. A decisive lever for reducing weight, cost, and material footprint.

Engine components and nacelle structures

We also work on parts for the engine environment and nacelles. For high-bypass engines, many structural components are produced in Ti-6Al-4V, a key material for meeting thermomechanical constraints and long-term durability requirements.

Forward and aft fuselage sections

Our teams produce parts for the forward and aft fuselage sections, where aerodynamic, structural, and integration demands are particularly high. HF and SPF processes provide extended design freedom, allowing optimized shapes while minimizing additional machining and complex assemblies.

DB-SPF fan blades

The Diffusion Bonding and SPF process are used to manufacture hollow fan blades, a technology combining diffusion bonding, Hot Forming, and Superplastic Forming. The result is fan blades that significantly reduce engine weight while maintaining performance and reliability. A strategic solution to enhance overall efficiency, performance, and output.

Our SPF & HF Presses

Hot Forming Presses (HF)

Hot Forming Presses

Our Hot Forming presses allow the production of stamped parts and complex structures from high-strength materials in a single cycle. The sheet metal is shaped directly by the tool, which imprints the mold’s geometry onto the heated part. Hot Forming reduces springback after forming and after machining, ensuring exceptional precision and tight surface profile tolerances.

The design of our HF presses is based on three key principles: heating and maintaining the tool at a uniform temperature, applying the appropriate force to the die, and controlling the closing speed. Each machine is customized to meet our clients’ specific requirements, whether in terms of dimensions, part geometry, tooling volume, or forging force capacity.

Our HF presses range, including heated platens and hot box configurations, offers flexibility, precision, and repeatability, while easily integrating automated systems for handling dies and parts. With capacities from 100 to 500 metric tons, and platens from 550×650mm to 4000×2000mm, our presses deliver high-performance solutions for production runs ranging from 50 to 10,000 parts.

Superplastic Forming Presses (SPF)

Our SPF presses embody Aries Industries’ benchmark expertise in Hot Forming. By using gas punch forming with argon, they achieve elongations above 500% and produce complex geometries with exceptional precision and uniformity.

By mastering the entire process, from press design to the precise control of thermal and pressure parameters, Aries Industries provides its clients with a key industrial advantage: a 20 to 30% reduction in production costs compared to conventional technologies, without compromising part performance.

With capacities ranging from 60 to 3000 metric tons, and platens from ∅580mm to 3500×2000mm, our SPF presses are fully customizable and designed to meet the requirements of the most advanced aerospace applications, from tool design to on-site installation.

Superplastic Forming Presses (SPF)
Diffusion bonding (SPF-DB)

Diffusion bonding (SPF-DB)

The diffusion bonding process is used to manufacture complex hollow parts. Diffusion bonding between several sheets occurs at the same temperature and pressure conditions as Superplastic Forming (SPF) and results in a nearly perfect joining of the sheets. The application of an anti-bonding agent in strategic areas determines where the sheets will resist bonding, creating a pattern of pockets. The introduction of noble gas will inflate the part to its final shape, the pockets creating an internal rib structure, optimising both weight and strength of the component.

Dual Presses (HF-SPF)

Aries Industries also develops combined presses, with capacity to perform both HF and SPF processes. This gives a higher flexibility, allowing to produce simple parts in HF, with a very short cycle time, and complex parts in SPF, all in a single machine.

These machines are available in the same range of forces and platen dimensions as SPF and HF presses, with an HF tonnage usually half of the SPF tonnage.
